Bonapp Expands Across Romania: Fighting Food Waste with Over 150 New Cities and Technical Enhancements
We’re excited to share that Bonapp, the Romanian startup dedicated to combating food waste, is expanding its reach across the country. With the addition of over 150 new cities where PENNY stores operate, Bonapp is now available in every county in Romania. This expansion is part of our ongoing commitment to reducing food waste and connecting consumers with retailers offering food products nearing their expiration dates at a minimum discount of 50%.
The Impact Awakens
The Bonapp app, available on both iOS and Android, has already made a significant impact. With over 250,000 downloads in major cities like Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Brașov, the app has helped save 300 tons of food from being discarded. This is a testament to the power of technology in addressing pressing global issues like food waste.
The Partnership Strikes Back
As Dan Crișan, COO of PENNY Romania, stated: “Managing food waste is a priority for us, and through our internal processes, we strive to reduce the amount of food waste as much as possible. Our partnership with Bonapp was a natural step, and expanding to 150 cities across the country by the end of the year is truly remarkable. The entire process is integrated and automated, making it very easy for our store colleagues and customers to use the app.”
Wastebusters: Who You Gonna Call?
Food waste is a global issue, with 40% of all available food being wasted, according to WWF. This waste accounts for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. In Romania alone, 2.2 million tons of food are thrown away each year, according to the European Environment Agency. Bonapp’s mission is to address this issue head-on by providing consumers with a convenient way to purchase discounted food that would otherwise go to waste.
Back to the Future: Scaling Up
So far, Bonapp has secured €1.4 million in funding through business angels and venture capital. As we continue to grow, we are actively collaborating with international investors for a new round of financing to further scale our impact and continue our mission to reduce food waste.
The Food Saver Chronicles: A New Hope
We’re proud to be part of this journey and excited about the future as we expand our reach and continue to make a difference in the fight against food waste in Romania and beyond.
